Luai Signs with PNG Chiefs for 2028

Jarome Luai, star player for the Wests Tigers, has made a significant decision about his future.

The Courier Mail has revealed that he has signed with the PNG Chiefs starting in 2028, making him the marquee signing for the new expansion franchise.

A key player for both NSW and Samoa, Luai plans to fulfill his commitments with the Tigers until the end of next season, having activated a one-year option in his current contract.

Once his time with the Tigers concludes, Luai will move to Port Moresby to usher in a new era for rugby league in Papua New Guinea.

He informed the Tigers of his decision on Tuesday afternoon, and a press conference is anticipated for Wednesday morning.

Luai currently earns approximately $1.2 million annually; however, the Papua New Guinea government has granted rugby league players a tax exemption as part of an agreement with the Australian government, which is supporting the team financially for its first decade.

Additionally, earlier on Tuesday, it was reported that Alex Johnston has also agreed to terms with the PNG Chiefs for a one-year contract beginning in 2028, having a clause that allowed him to negotiate prior to November 1.

Johnston confirmed his new venture with a post on Instagram.
