The Brisbane Broncos credit much of their recent success to head coach Michael Maguire, who began his tenure in 2025 and guided the team to its first premiership in nearly twenty years.
Despite this acclaim, Darren Lockyer, a Broncos legend, remains unsettled about Maguire's hiring, largely due to the dismissal of fellow club icon Kevin Walters.
Lockyer, who has recently taken on the role of head coach at the London Broncos in the Super League, expressed that even with the team's victory, his frustrations regarding the circumstances surrounding Walters' sacking in 2024 linger.
"Of course it was hard," he told The Courier Mail.
Lockyer noted that while he hasn't completely severed ties, many of his former teammates, with whom he celebrated premierships, now have strained relationships with him as a result of the decision.
He acknowledged his understanding of the club's choice but still harbors discontent over losing Walters, saying, "Not that I made that decision [to sack Walters]," Lockyer reflected.
