Leo Thompson, the new recruit for the Canterbury Bulldogs, has shared insights into his decision to leave the Newcastle Knights. His choice was largely influenced by a conversation with coach Cameron Ciraldo and his experience of the Bulldogs' passionate fan culture, which ultimately led to his signing of a four-year contract with the club located in Belmore.
The Kiwi prop, committed to staying at Belmore through the end of 2029, expressed how Ciraldo's straightforward approach and the club's faith in his abilities impressed him.
"I held onto that [one-club mindset] for a long time, but they told me areas of my game that I could work on - and I'm always keen to learn and get better," Thompson told 9News.
"They told me they could help me with some of my weaknesses."
Thompson reminisced about attending the Bulldogs' semi-final match against the Penrith Panthers last season as a fan. He positioned himself in the upper stands to fully absorb the fervor of the Bulldogs supporters without being recognized.
"I snuck into the stadium, turned up late and sat in the nosebleeds so nobody would recognise me," he said.
"I experienced what it's like to sit in the crowd and hear how vocal they are, I love playing in front of a huge crowd. I love that atmosphere."
