Leeds Rhinos back-rower James McDonnell is preparing to leave the club at the season's conclusion, securing a move to the NRL.
With his 26th birthday approaching this week, McDonnell is currently under contract with Leeds only until the end of this season, having signed a short-term extension last April.
Despite the Rhinos' attempts to negotiate a long-term deal, McDonnell has chosen to pursue an opportunity in Australia.
While his new team has not yet been announced, McDonnell is expected to reunite with former Leeds player Harry Newman in the NRL. Newman has already committed to a two-year contract with the Perth Bears, indicative of the increasing presence of English players in the new NRL team.
Recognized in the latest Super League Dream Team, McDonnell had his most successful season in 2025, scoring nine tries and establishing himself as one of the league's most dependable edge forwards.
Ian Blease, Leeds' sporting director, mentioned that the club was aware of McDonnell's aspirations and appreciated his honesty during the discussions. "We have both agreed to make a decision as early as possible so we can plan for 2027," Blease remarked.
