NSW coach Michael Maguire has hit back at the doubters of his decision to appoint Jake Trbojevic as captain, despite the skipper being subbed off just 23 minutes into the crucial decider on Wednesday night.

Trbojevic's brief appearance in the Blues' 14-4 victory brought his total minutes on the field to a mere 83 out of the 240-minute series, triggering confusion among fans who took to social media to voice their frustrations.

"Jake Trbojevic is the luckiest skipper we've ever had.

Done absolutely nothing the whole series and will lift the shield," one fan tweeted on X, previously known as Twitter.

"Jake Trbojevic is that kid who does nothing in the group assignment but still gets an A," another quipped.

However, Maguire was swift to defend his captain in the press conference after the game, commending Trbojevic for his behind-the-scenes influence on the team.

"People have been questioning - I had many of you ask - about Jake being captain," the rookie Blues coach remarked.
