NRL sensation Latrell Mitchell has copped a dose of punishment for his involvement in a white-substance fiasco, but there may be a surprise twist waiting to unfold in this tale of redemption.
The league authorities have slapped Mitchell with a one-game ban and a hefty $20,000 fine for tarnishing the game's reputation.
Not to be outdone, the Rabbitohs have come down hard on their star player with a whopping $100,000 fine, out of which $80,000 is hanging over Mitchell's head like a Damoclean sword.
The drama unfolded when the superstar fullback was caught on camera in a questionable situation involving a white substance during a coaching clinic in Dubbo earlier this month.
After facing the music with the Souths board, Mitchell took to social media to express his regrets, only to be met with sanctions just 50 minutes after interim South Sydney coach Ben Hornby wrapped up his media briefing.
In addition to the penalties handed down by the NRL, Mitchell has been tasked with seeking redemption through appropriate remediation and educational programs recommended by the league's wellbeing and education unit.
The Rabbitohs have also laid down the law by requiring him to enroll in a wellbeing program and pledging to cough up the rest of his fine if he dares to breach his playing contract again.
"This has been a real tough one for everyone at South Sydney, from the management to the players and the fans, and of course, Latrell himself," said Rabbitohs boss Blake Solly, hinting at the rocky road ahead for Mitchell as he seeks to make amends in the arena of league glory.
