'He wouldn't drop the ball': Latrell Mitchell expected to dominate if given the opportunity to don the sky blue jersey again

Latrell Mitchell has had his fair share of highs and lows this season, but his coach is backing him to shine if he gets the call-up to represent New South Wales.

South Sydney's interim coach Ben Hornby has declared that Mitchell "wouldn't let anyone down" if he gets selected for a State of Origin comeback, with the Rabbitohs' star gearing up to lead the team in Indigenous Round this weekend.

Mitchell last played for the Blues in 2021, where he made a lasting impact at left centre, and is being touted as a potential nightmare for Queensland's defense in the upcoming series opener, despite not hitting top form yet this season.

Even though he recently returned from a suspension and has been finding the try-line with ease, Mitchell hasn't quite hit his peak performance level as South Sydney continues to face challenges as a team.

Although his club form is still on the rise, Hornby is confident that Mitchell would lift his game for NSW if given the opportunity, especially after missing out last year due to a calf injury.

"If I had to pick someone to go up against on the field, it definitely wouldn't be Latrell," Hornby remarked, as Mitchell prepares to lead the team against Parramatta in the absence of injured players Cameron Murray and Cody Walker.

"He's a top-tier player and always steps up in big moments, so there's no reason why he shouldn't be in contention for a spot in the team."
