The Newcastle Knights are reportedly leading the chase for Roosters discard Sandon Smith, seeing him as a potential addition to their hooker roster. However, there's speculation that the Knights might want Smith to take on a halves role, allowing Fletcher Sharpe to return to his preferred position at fullback. This raises questions about the future of Kalyn Ponga.

Phil Rothfield shared on Triple M radio this week that Smith is scheduled to meet with Newcastle officials on Wednesday, with a contract possible after being informed he could leave the Roosters early. Smith started the season impressively for the Roosters but has since been relegated to reserve grade following Sam Walker's return from injury.

With Daly Cherry-Evans' expected arrival in Bondi in 2026, Smith's position has become less secure, especially with players like Hugo Savala and Toby Rodwell in the mix. Rothfield provided insight on Tuesday, stating, "My mail is Sandon Smith is driving up to Newcastle on Wednesday to look at their high performance centre and all their facilities, with the view of joining Newcastle on a two or three-year deal. I think he'd be a really good signing to complement (Dylan) Brown."

Rothfield noted that the Knights see Smith as a 'utility' player capable of filling roles as both a No.9 and in the halves. Barry Toohey from the Newcastle Herald previously mentioned that Smith would primarily play hooker if he signs with the Knights.

Newcastle is also anticipating the arrival of Dylan Brown in 2026 to fill the halfback position, with expectations he'll team up with Sharpe in the halves. Sharpe made a significant impact this year as a five-eighth before his season ended due to a ruptured spleen and lacerated kidney.

The 21-year-old transitioned to No.6 in a bid for consistent first-grade time, but his optimal position lies in fullback. As concerns about Ponga's future with Newcastle grow, Smith's potential addition could have implications for the halfback role, allowing Brown to play five-eighth and Sharpe to resume his fullback duties.
