Newcastle Knights head coach Adam O'Brien disclosed that his team faced the possibility of forfeiting their match against the New Zealand Warriors due to a virus outbreak.
Just hours before the game, it became clear that many players were affected, with reports indicating that up to 12 players were uncertain about participating.
Most of the squad was unable to eat and remained in bed while preparing for the match, leading to a challenging situation on the field.
Despite these difficulties, the Knights played but ultimately lost the match, succumbing to a last-minute try from Leka Halasima of the Warriors.
During a broadcast on Fox Sports, it was noted that assistant coach Kurt Gidley, who is a former player for the Knights, had even brought his boots in case he needed to step in.
O'Brien highlighted the severity of the situation, mentioning that he had to revise his team sheet multiple times and that the possibility of forfeiting the game was considered.
