The Newcastle Knights have reportedly offered one-year contracts to former State of Origin players Dane Gagai and Tyson Frizell after facing fan backlash for initially opting not to extend their contracts.
Both players have options that needed to be activated by June 30 to remain for the following season.
Fans expressed their discontent, even starting a petition to keep Gagai, who has performed notably well this year despite the Knights' struggles, currently positioned 13th on the ladder.
Gagai showcased his skill by switching from centre to fullback after Kalyn Ponga's season-ending injury.
While Frizell hasn't had his best season, his experience is invaluable to the Knights' young squad.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Knights' offer aims to rework their contracts, allowing the team to retain both players at potentially lower salaries.
Gagai is reportedly earning around $400,000 this year, and the Knights hope to secure him for less, while Frizell's salary is not as high.
The team is facing salary cap challenges with Ponga earning $1.4 million annually and Dylan Brown set to join in 2026 for $1.3 million per year.
Complicating matters, new reports have emerged suggesting Ponga might leave the Knights two years before his contract ends.
He has reportedly signed with a New Zealand-based rugby union agent, who is exploring opportunities for him in European clubs.
