The Newcastle Knights have announced that Phoenix Crossland is on schedule to return for the first week of the finals following successful knee surgery.
Head coach Justin Holbrook did not guarantee his return but suggested this is the expected timeline for Crossland, who underwent the procedure after last week's unexpected defeat to the Manly Sea Eagles at home.
This surgery means he will miss the upcoming match against the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland, and the Knights will utilize their bye in the last round to give Crossland a two-week rest before the finals, which they have qualified for but might need to win this weekend to secure a home elimination game.
"He is doing well, so hopefully the finals week he will be back," Holbrook stated during a media session prior to the team's departure to Auckland.
"He is one of those players we have been talking about carrying a lot of things. Sore back, sore calf and now his knee, so it will do him the world of good."
"The fact we have had to slow him down a bit, I think, will help him, and we will be better for it in the finals."
Throughout the 2026 season, Crossland has been a standout player for the Knights, securing the dummy half position and making it his own.
He has also signed a long-term contract with the Knights and aims to play for New Zealand in the upcoming World Cup.
Harrison Graham will replace Crossland for the final regular season game, having also made a strong impression this year.
