The Newcastle Knights are reportedly considering the replacement of head coach Adam O'Brien at the end of the NRL season, following what has been another disappointing campaign.
Recent reports indicate that star player Kalyn Ponga may even be shopped around for a move to rugby union, reflecting ongoing issues within the club.
Compounding these challenges, O'Brien faced criticism for a mid-season trade that saw Manly reserve grade halfback Jake Arthur join the Knights in exchange for prop Paul Bryan.
This deal, which was in jeopardy until just hours before the June 30 deadline, has raised eyebrows, especially since the Knights already have several halfbacks on their roster.
The signing has repercussions beyond team dynamics; it may also impact the club's coaching search.
Brad Arthur, Jake's father and a former Eels coach, has been linked to the Knights' head coach position amid O'Brien's struggles.
However, sports commentator David Riccio suggested on SEN Radio that Brad Arthur might be hesitant to take the role.
He noted that the pressure of coaching his sons could deter him from considering the Knights job.
"Just off the top I was listening to the feedback in regards to Brad Arthur and the Newcastle Knights and the insinuation he would be a perfect fit given his two sons are now there.
I see it the complete opposite way," Riccio stated.
With these developments, the Knights' coaching search may become more complex, especially if they consider options that could involve familial ties.
The upcoming end of the season promises further scrutiny on the club's direction and leadership.
