Knights Eye Rookie as Gagai Replacement

The Newcastle Knights are gearing up for a future without veteran Dane Gagai, having offered rookie star Wilson De Courcey a two-year contract to remain in the region.

Recognizing his potential, Knights scouts brought the promising talent from Western Sydney to join their SG Ball team for the upcoming 2024 season.

De Courcey has made rapid advancements within the organization, moving up to reserve grade where he is making a strong case for his NRL debut.

In the 2024 NSW Cup season, he scored 19 tries across 18 matches, leading the Newcastle Herald to report that the club sees him as a potential long-term successor to Gagai, prompting them to propose a new contract.

In 2025, he was promoted to the Knights' development list, a move designed to bring him closer to the NRL team, with this arrangement continuing into the current year.

Gagai, who has had an impressive 16-season career at the highest level, is still producing exceptional performances as the right center for the Knights but will not receive a contract for the next season.

The former Australian schoolboy has participated in the Knights' pre-season trials and is currently positioned on the extended bench, inching nearer to his NRL debut.

This weekend, the Penrith junior has been assigned the 19 jersey for the clash against the Raiders, meaning he could be called upon to bolster the team's attack at any moment.

Should an injury or HIA occur, he may find himself unexpectedly making his debut if coach Justin Holbrook deems him ready for the challenge.
