Newcastle Knights coach Justin Holbrook has shared insights about the team's halves situation, expressing an expectation for a clearer playmaking partnership in the coming weeks as they prepare for the 2026 NRL season.
During an appearance on SEN 1170 Breakfast, Holbrook indicated that while the Knights have not finalized their halves pairing, he is optimistic about having a first-choice duo ready by the time the team kicks off in Las Vegas.
"To be honest, I'll probably use the next three weeks on it," Holbrook stated. "I'll use the next few weeks shuffling guys around, figuring out the side of the field they're going to play on, and it'll work itself out."
The Knights have a robust selection of players, including Dylan Brown, Fletcher Sharpe, and Sandon Smith, all vying for positions in the halves.
Brown, who has signed a lucrative 10-year, $13 million deal from the Parramatta Eels, is expected to play a key role in the halves, though it remains to be seen if he will take the halfback or five-eighth position.
Smith, who joined from the Sydney Roosters, also adds versatility, as he can play both hooker and in the halves. He will compete with Phoenix Crossland for the No.9 spot.
