Crossover stars lining up to bolster Kiwi Ferns
The Kiwi Ferns are preparing for the Pacific Championships and next year's World Cup, with an exciting influx of crossover athletes joining the NRLW. More talent may soon join the ranks following the Women's Rugby World Cup.
Despite Amber Hall's decision to represent Fetu Samoa ahead of RLWC26, the team has gained strength with the addition of Warriors graduates Patricia Maliepo and Payton Takimoana, who notably scored 15 tries in her first season.
Both Maliepo and Takimoana earned spots in the RLPA's 2025 NRLW Dream Team, a selection determined by fellow players. Additionally, teammates Shakira Baker and Tysha Ikenasio have successfully transitioned from rugby union to the NRLW.
The Black Ferns competing in the Women's Rugby World Cup in England feature players like Stacey Waaka, who previously played for the Broncos in 2024, former Knights and Cowboys back Katelyn Vahaakolo, and Portia Woodman-Wickcliffe, who has shown interest in joining the NRLW.
Sources suggest at least one player from the Black Ferns has expressed a desire to play for the Kiwi Ferns during the Pacific Championships against Australia and Fetu Samoa. NZRL officials are currently weighing the advantages and disadvantages of including her in the squad.
New Zealand's Pacific Championships campaign is set to commence on October 19 with a double-header against Samoa at Go Media Stadium. This will be followed by a match against the Jillaroos prior to the Kiwis' match against Tonga at Eden Park on November 2.
