Former Kiwi Fern and Warrior, Kathleen Wharton, is being fondly remembered for her impressive rugby league career and her significant impact both within the game and the community at large.
Wharton, formerly known as Keremete, played a crucial role in the Kiwi Ferns team that dominated the Jillaroos in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final, emerging victorious with a scoreline of 34-0.
Her time as Kiwi Fern #92 spanned over 14 Tests, solidifying her place in history.
Taking a break from rugby league to focus on raising her family, Wharton made a powerful comeback at the age of 35, joining the Warriors in the 2019 NRLW competition.
A mother of three, she not only excelled on the field but also made a name for herself off it, delving into roles such as coaching, administration, and making significant contributions in youth justice, mental health, and wellbeing initiatives in South Auckland and Northland.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook, Wharton's husband, Andrew, paid tribute to her legacy.
The rugby league community mourns the loss of a true champion, whose impact will be felt for years to come.
