Max King, a middle forward for the Canterbury Bulldogs, is reportedly considering an unexpected move away from the club at the conclusion of 2027, potentially joining the PNG Chiefs.
His contract with the Belmore team expires at the end of next year. Despite being one of their most reliable players, the ongoing salary cap constraints could make it challenging for the Bulldogs to keep him.
On Triple M Radio, former head coach Shane Flanagan and ex-journalist Phil Rothfield both mentioned having sources suggesting that King might be in Port Moresby when the 2028 pre-season begins.
Having debuted with the Gold Coast Titans in 2017 and subsequently moving to the Melbourne Storm in 2019, King has played 158 NRL games to date.
He had not achieved 20 games in any season before joining the Bulldogs in 2022, yet, if he participates this weekend, he will have only one season under 20 games-19 in 2024-since starting at Belmore.
King's consistent efforts have made him a valuable player for the Bulldogs, showcasing strong performance this year despite the team's overall struggles, averaging 122 meters per match and a tackling success rate of nearly 95 percent, along with 21 offloads.
His possible departure could raise concerns for the Bulldogs; however, with Jacob Preston recently signed and financial limitations due to existing contracts, persuading King to stay might be difficult.
The Chiefs could offer him a less lucrative deal thanks to tax benefits, allowing him to take on a leadership role in Port Moresby.
Under coach Willie Peters, the Chiefs have already made several significant signings, including Jarome Luai, Zac Lomax, and Joseph Manu, but have only brought in Connor Watson and English forward Matty Lees for the front line so far.
With limited funds remaining, they are likely focusing on acquiring more forwards, as discussions with Hudson Young about a potential seven-figure deal are also underway.
Given his strong work ethic and straightforward approach, King would fit well in balancing the flashier signings the Chiefs have made up to this point.
