Tonga's Eliesa Katoa 'being monitored' after surgery
Eliesa Katoa is currently hospitalized as he recovers from seizure activity and brain bleeding, which he sustained during Tonga's loss to New Zealand in the Pacific Cup.
The second-rower initially experienced a head knock from teammate Lehi Hopoate during the pre-match warm-up; however, it was determined that he did not need a head injury assessment (HIA).
Once the game started, Katoa encountered additional head trauma when he collided with Will Penisini in the 10th minute, leading to him leaving the field but passing a subsequent HIA.
In the second half, while attempting to tackle New Zealand forward Naufahu Whyte, Katoa received a third blow to the head, which necessitated another HIA.
Officials from Melbourne confirmed to AAP that the 25-year-old athlete ultimately endured bleeding on the brain, though they remain optimistic about the absence of long-term repercussions.
"Eli Katoa was taken to hospital after suffering seizure activity on the bench during the second half of yesterday's Pacific Championships match between Tonga and New Zealand," the club stated.
The statement continued, "Eli underwent surgery overnight and is in a stable condition being supported by his partner and mother."
