Isaiya Katoa became a father three weeks before the Dolphins' first finals victory, adding a new perspective during the busiest stage of his career.
"To be able to welcome my daughter three weeks ago into this world is the best thing that's ever happened to me, it's so special …" Katoa said.
The 22-year-old is the youngest captain in the finals, sharing the Dolphins' leadership with Tom Gilbert.
He made a surprise debut as a five-eighth in the Dolphins' opening NRL match in 2023 under Wayne Bennett, then developed into a leading halfback.
After beating the Warriors in their first finals match, the Dolphins face the Roosters at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night for a place in the decider.
Katoa's Pasifika upbringing is reflected in his thoughtful manner, although former leaders Jesse Bromwich and Felise Kaufusi once urged him to be more forceful.
"you're the halfback of the team, we want you to tell us what to do, we want you to direct us around," Katoa recalled them saying.
He believes captaining the side has not significantly changed his responsibilities because halfbacks already direct teammates throughout matches.
"I felt the best leaders always lead through their actions and not just through their words," Katoa said.
Gilbert said Katoa's rise was expected, praising his preparation, commitment to results and ability to recover from pressure surrounding his performances.
"He still works hard, he leads us around the park in a good manner and the boys love playing with him," Gilbert said.
Katoa credits coach Kristian Woolf's calm, adaptable approach for helping Tonga remain composed in difficult situations.
He and Woolf will continue working together with Tonga at the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, after Katoa debuted internationally at 18.
Katoa is eligible to represent Tonga, the Cook Islands, New Zealand or Australia, and previously came through Penrith's system as a Glenmore Park Brumbies junior.
His playing style has drawn comparisons with Nathan Cleary, though Katoa says their methods differ according to their teams' strengths.
