Dolphins star halfback Isaiya Katoa has expressed his desire to one day represent the Cook Islands. Katoa holds eligibility for Tonga, the Cook Islands, and Australia. This year, he will represent Tonga at the Pacific Championships, continuing his association with the nation after playing for them in the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.

To date, Katoa has competed in nine games for Tonga and has plans to don the national jersey again this year. However, during an appearance on Channel 9's 100% Footy, he made it clear that he aspires to wear the Cook Islands colors at some point in his career. "Tonga I'll be running out for [at the Pacific Championships], but mum is Cook Islands, so one day I want to represent the Cook Islands," Katoa stated.

At just 21 years old, Katoa did not specify a timeline for when he plans to make this switch. The Cook Islands are currently gearing up for a qualification tournament for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which will take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The possibility of Katoa switching nations next year is uncertain, but under the existing International Rugby League rules, it remains a viable option.

In addition to his ambitions with the Cook Islands, Katoa has also set his sights on playing State of Origin for New South Wales, although he recognizes that there are many established players ahead of him in the queue for selection.
