In a region primarily dominated by AFL enthusiasts, the Karratha Kangaroos Junior Rugby League, located 1,530km north of Perth, has achieved a remarkable feat by being named the NRL's community club of the year. This distinction positions them as the first club from Western Australia to surpass competitors from the rugby-loving states of Queensland and New South Wales.

The announcement came unexpectedly from NRL officials in August, and representatives from the Kangaroos were invited to Sydney for a formal presentation during the NRL grand final.

Expressing his joy, club president Josh Cruice stated he was "over the Moon" about the recognition. He emphasized, "It just goes to show what the club's about - we're an inclusive community club." He credited the collective effort of volunteers who dedicate countless hours to support the club.

The NRL highlighted the reasons for their decision, noting the club's "inclusive culture, innovative spirit, and unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for young players."

For young players like 12-year-old JC Pukeke, the significance of the Karratha Kangaroos extends far beyond just playing the game.
