The debate over who will take the fullback spot for the Kangaroos has garnered significant attention, particularly between Dylan Edwards and Reece Walsh. For nearly a decade, Edwards has been recognized as one of the premier fullbacks in the league, consistently challenging the likes of James Tedesco, the captain of the Sydney Roosters.
With Tedesco nearing the end of his career, there were high expectations for Edwards to lead the position into the next era. However, the emergence of Reece Walsh has complicated this expectation.
Walsh, the 2025 Clive Churchill medallist from the Brisbane Broncos, exhibited remarkable performance during this year's finals, arguably reaching an unprecedented peak that could reshape his future. This impressive showing has led to speculation about his role on the national team.
According to the Daily Telegraph, incoming Australia coach Kevin Walters is likely to favor Walsh over the established Edwards as the Kangaroos' fullback. While Walters has not confirmed his Test squad details publicly, national selector Darren Lockyer gave insights suggesting Walsh may edge out Edwards for the role.
"It's up to Kevvie, he will pick his 17 or 18, but Kevvie had a great experience with Reece at the Broncos, so he's a bit of a fan," Lockyer noted, indicating Walsh's strong chance of selection.
