Kalyn Ponga, the rugby league prodigy who first dazzled fans in Townsville all those years ago, is now gearing up to lead his Newcastle Knights back to his old stomping grounds for a crucial finals showdown.
Despite already winning the prestigious Dally M Medal last year with a stellar performance, the skipper still felt he had a point to prove this season after facing a career-threatening concussion scare.
Last year, after seeking treatment from brain specialists overseas, Ponga defied the odds by carrying the Knights to the brink of the finals.
Now, history seems to be repeating itself as he has made a triumphant return to form after a serious injury setback earlier in the season.
With a Lisfranc injury sidelining him for nearly three months, the superstar fullback is back on the field, determined to prove that the best version of himself is still the best.
"Coming back from my injury, I sort of felt like I had a point to prove," Ponga said.
"Just proving that the best version of myself is what I strive for.
When you're sidelined with injury, you're not at your peak.
But now, every day is about working towards being the best version of myself on the field."
As Ponga prepares to return to Townsville, he is ready to once again carry the weight of his team on his shoulders and showcase his undeniable talent in the finals showdown.
