In a dazzling display of skill and dominance, Kalyn Ponga showcased his status in the NRL with a masterclass performance that put Latrell Mitchell to shame.

The Newcastle Knights captain proved to be the standout player in the match against South Sydney, outshining his Rabbitohs rival and delivering a knockout blow.

Ponga's exceptional performance was instrumental in the Knights' impressive 29-10 win, which keeps their finals charge going strong.

The fullback had a hand in all three of his team's tries in the first half, with winger Greg Marzhew reaping the rewards on each occasion.

Ponga's contribution included two try assists, 134 running metres, four tackle breaks, and three line breaks.

Meanwhile, Mitchell's woes continued as he was placed on report for an elbow to the head of Tyson Frizell, resulting in his sin binning.

Adding to his troubles, Mitchell now faces a one-game ban after being charged on Monday, or a potential two-game ban if he fights the charge and loses.

The Knights' victory marked their seventh consecutive win, solidifying their position in the top eight.

Ponga's outstanding form has been a key factor in the team's remarkable resurgence under coach Adam O'Brien.

The decision to prioritize his club footy with Newcastle by opting out of representative football in 2023 has undoubtedly paid off for Ponga.

Michael Ennis, a premiership-winning Sharks great and commentator on Fox League, expressed his admiration for Ponga's current form.

Ennis compared him to Broncos flyer Reece Walsh and suggested that Ponga had surpassed him as the competition's most in-form fullback.

"Just when you thought Reece Walsh is the main man, Kalyn Ponga just continues to run him down," Ennis remarked.

Ponga's masterclass performance against South Sydney not only solidifies his status as one of the NRL's most exceptional players but also highlights his importance to the Knights' success.

With his outstanding skill set and game-changing abilities, Ponga has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with on the rugby league field.
