Wayne Bennett has thrown a lifeline to Josh Schuster after his messy $1 million departure from the Sea Eagles, signing him to a one-year deal with South Sydney.

The Incoming Rabbitohs coach is taking a gamble on the talented back-rower, hoping to give him a fresh start in the NRL in 2025.

"We believe that a change of scenery and a new club environment will help Josh reignite his career," said Rabbitohs head of football Mark Ellison.

"With new coaches, new teammates, and a fresh start, we have high hopes for Josh to reach his full potential and help the team achieve success."

After showing promise in 2020, Schuster struggled to find consistency and was relegated to reserve grade in 2023.

However, a strong comeback earned him a contract extension before his departure from Manly.

Now, with the opportunity to wear the red and green of South Sydney, Schuster has a chance to prove himself once again in the NRL.

Bennett's faith in the young player could be just what he needs to make a successful comeback to the top level of the game.
