Bennett discusses Johnston's future after a historic achievement
Last night, Alex Johnston etched his name into rugby league history, scoring his 213th career try to become the highest try-scorer in NRL history.
Making his debut in 2014 with the Rabbitohs, Johnston has shown unwavering loyalty to the club throughout his career.
However, as the celebrations faded, the focus shifted to the next phase of Johnston's impressive journey and the possibilities that lie ahead for this exceptional player.
The 31-year-old, who takes pride in his Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and Papua New Guinean roots, has previously shown interest in joining the new NRL PNG franchise set to launch in 2028 as a tribute to his heritage.
Though he is contracted with the Rabbitohs until the conclusion of the 2027 season, Johnston remains uncertain about where his career will lead him next.
At the post-match press conference, Wayne Bennett stood by Johnston, offering unwavering support, regardless of whether that support means departing from the club.
"Souths will always be there for him, so if he wants to do something else then come back to Souths, that's never going to be a problem," Bennett said.
"The game is blessed to have a player like him, particularly when winning this award as well, because he's as good a player as I've ever coached, with regards to his behaviour, discipline, commitment to team - all the things that matter."
"He's a 10 out of 10. The game is blessed that he's broken the record."
