Johnston Breaks Record, Fans Rush Field

Alex Johnston is swamped by fans at Allianz Stadium.

Allianz Stadium: Alex Johnston has etched his name in rugby league history, and despite the wishes of South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett and the NRL, an exhilarating wave of fans surged onto the pitch to join the celebration.

The indelible moments at Allianz Stadium will be cherished by both Johnston and the 40,000 fans in attendance from the Sydney Roosters and Souths. In a remarkable scene, Johnston was engulfed by supporters just a minute into the second half as he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the highest try-scorer in the sport's history.

To surpass the long-standing record of 212 tries held by Ken Irvine since 1973, Johnston needed to score twice.

He leveled the score with a try in the 32nd minute, but chaos erupted when he secured his second try, clinching the record.
