Alex Johnston is poised to become Papua New Guinea's inaugural NRL signing, thanks to a specific clause in his contract that permits early negotiations with the new franchise. Typically, players are barred from discussing contracts with other clubs until November 1, 2026. However, the clause in Johnston's agreement allows for discussions to commence ahead of PNG's entry into the league in 2028.
"Alex has said with his connection to PNG it would be cool to be player number one," said Souths CEO Blake Solly. He noted Johnston's deep ties to PNG, having served as captain of the national team and participated in 10 Test matches, earning significant respect within the nation. "He will always have a home here at Souths, but if Alex and his family do decide they want to be part of the PNG team on its entry to the NRL competition; we respect and support that decision."
Last month, Johnston traveled to PNG where he expressed his enthusiasm for potentially giving the emerging franchise a head start.
