The Sydney Roosters community is mourning the diagnosis of club legend Johnny Mayes, who has been informed by doctors that he has a terminal brain tumor.
The 78-year-old premiership-winning halfback has been given only weeks, possibly a few months, to live.
Mayes played a pivotal role in the Roosters' golden era under coach Jack Gibson, leading the team to consecutive premiership victories in 1974 and 1975, and also secured a title with Manly in 1973.
Renowned for his strategic game management and composure under pressure, he represented Australia in the 1975 World Cup.
His son, Glen, shared with Nine that the family learned about the aggressive nature of the tumor following a recent MRI scan.
The news has left fans and the rugby league community heartbroken.
