Leeds Rhinos forward James McDonnell is set to depart the club at the conclusion of the 2026 Super League season to join the NRL, reuniting with his current teammate Harry Newman in the southern hemisphere.
According to reports from skysports.com, the specific team that McDonnell will join has not been disclosed by Leeds as his contract nears its expiration.
Harry Newman has already signed a two-year contract with the Perth Bears that will begin once his current Rhinos contract ends in the autumn.
Last year, McDonnell was a standout player for Leeds, participating in every game and earning a place in the Super League Dream Team. Additionally, he was selected as part of the England training squad ahead of the Ashes.
The back-rower made the switch to Leeds from Wigan Warriors prior to the 2023 season and has previously spent time on loan at York Knights and Leigh Leopards during his career.
Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease stated: "When we agreed a contract extension with James back in April last year, we knew his ambitions as a player."
