Jamal Fogarty sometimes feels uncertain about being the top halfback for Canberra, particularly as the team approaches a crucial qualifying final against Brisbane.
Despite not lacking confidence, especially following an impressive season where he guided the Raiders to the minor premiership, he still experiences moments of self-doubt.
Part of this comes from the influence of coach Ricky Stuart, who, even at 58 and a quarter years old, still demonstrates an exceptional level of skill. Jonathan recalls, "Even at training now, he'll tell me 'grab the ball and kick it like this' and he'll do it perfect first go, and I'll be out there doing 10 reps and I still can't get it right."
While Stuart may offer critiques when needed, Fogarty appreciates that he's not trying to mold him into a replica of himself. "Sometimes he might tip me up if I don't do something well, but he's not trying to coach me to be like him," Fogarty states.
He acknowledges the disparity in their natural abilities, expressing gratitude for Stuart's understanding of his talents. "I've always respected that with Stick. I don't have the natural ability he did," he admits, recognizing that "He understands he's a bit more talented than I am. He knows my strengths and what I do well and he encourages those things."
