In a move reminiscent of a last-minute try-saving tackle, Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes has accepted a one-match ban after pushing referee Chris Butler during Melbourne's thrilling 30-26 victory over the Warriors.
Hughes, defending the Storm's line, collided with Butler while trying to stop Rocco Berry from scoring, causing the ref to hit the ground.
Despite the questionable decision by the match review committee to charge him with contrary conduct, Hughes opted to take the ban like a true sportsman, rather than risk a longer suspension by contesting the charge.
The NRL community, including former player Michael Ennis, has erupted in outrage over the decision to penalize Hughes.
Ennis, echoing the sentiments of many, labeled the suspension as "ridiculous" and "absolute stupidity." He argued that Hughes' actions were merely an accident caused by the ref obstructing his view, rather than a deliberate act of frustration towards the official.
Ennis called for common sense to prevail and for Hughes to be cleared of any wrongdoing, emphasizing that the one-match ban was unjust and unnecessary.
Time will tell if Hughes and the Storm will appeal the decision, but for now, Melbourne will have to face the Knights without their key playmaker in what promises to be a must-watch clash on the NRL calendar.
