Jack Cole, aged 23, is currently the most experienced active player at Penrith who has yet to participate in a finals campaign. With the end of the regular season approaching, he is eager to experience his inaugural finals series.
Penrith is scheduled to face Wests Tigers in their final match of the regular season, featuring a strong lineup that includes star player Nathan Cleary. A victory would secure the minor premiership for the Panthers, boosting their confidence ahead of the finals.
After making his debut for the team in late 2022, Cole has primarily played off the bench or stepped in as a backup starter. However, following the suspension of Jack Cogger, Cole started in the recent clash against Canterbury and is expected to continue this role against the Tigers.
"You just want to be a part of the big games," Cole remarked, emphasizing the motivation behind his dedication to the sport during challenging pre-season training.
He has played a total of 20 games, starting six alongside Cleary in the halves. Their partnership has been somewhat limited this season, with only two starts together before this week's game. Nonetheless, remaining active and avoiding player rest before the finals is seen as beneficial for their chemistry.
Cole noted adjustments in Cleary's gameplay this year, stating, "He's still got the structure there, but you're probably noticing he's taking the line on a bit more." He characterizes Cleary's style as reactive, highlighting a shift in strategy within the team.
The Panthers' future in the finals hinges on their performance in the upcoming match, where they could finish first or second in the standings. They are assured a minimum of two finals matches, and Cogger will be available for later rounds.
As his time with the Panthers approaches a conclusion, Cole is determined to prove himself worthy of the No. 6 jersey. "It's cool to finish how I wanted to start," he shared, eager to contribute significantly in the final rounds and potentially secure a spot in his first finals match.
"I've just got to do my best," he concluded. "I'm looking forward to it."
