Is London calling as future NRL season opener?

The NRL is currently considering London as a potential host for the season opener once their current contract with Las Vegas expires in 2028.

The league had initially signed a five-year deal to host season opening games in Las Vegas.

The second year of the deal saw the inclusion of two English Super League teams, as well as a women's international match.

The games in Las Vegas saw the Penrith Panthers and the Canberra Raiders emerging victorious, with larger crowds and increased TV ratings compared to the previous year.

According to a report by the Sydney Morning Herald, the NRL is interested in continuing to take the season opener on the road each year, even after fulfilling their commitment to play in Las Vegas.

This decision comes as a result of the success of the games in Las Vegas, with the league exploring different international locations to showcase their season opener.

"London is now in the mix to potentially take over hosting duties for the season opener, as the NRL looks to expand its global footprint.

The success of the games in Las Vegas, with increased attendance and TV ratings, has motivated the NRL to consider other international locations for future season openers."

Despite the current contract with Las Vegas, all teams will still fulfill their obligation to play in the city before the end of the deal.

However, the NRL is now considering future season openers in different international locations, with London being a prime candidate.

This move aligns with the league's goal of expanding its presence globally and attracting new audiences to the sport.

"The NRL's interest in hosting future season openers in London demonstrates their commitment to growing the game on an international scale.

The success of the games in Las Vegas has paved the way for more opportunities to showcase the league's talent and excitement to fans around the world."
