Is Crichton the captain to lead NSW's charge?

Gould weighs in on NSW captaincy call

Phil Gould believes that Stephen Crichton is destined to captain New South Wales but feels that this year's State of Origin isn't the right moment for him to step into that role.

Reports from au.news.yahoo.com highlight Crichton as a rising leader in the NRL; he was awarded the Dally M Captain of the Year in 2024 during his first season with the Bulldogs after his move from the Panthers.

Despite lacking prior captaincy experience, Crichton's leadership has been instrumental in helping the Bulldogs overcome their finals drought and ascend to the top of the table.

While Gould asserts that Crichton would excel if selected to lead the state, he notes that NSW coach Laurie Daley has multiple options, including the current captain Jake Trbojevic.

Additionally, Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo are also strong candidates.

Gould recognized Crichton's unique qualities, stating, "Stephen Crichton is a very special human being.

He's not just a great footballer, he's also a very special human being," during the launch of the club's Game-Changers Program in Belmore.

He maintains confidence that Crichton will eventually become a leader for both NSW and Samoa in the future.
