This week in history, the Sharks made a legendary move by snaring the Immortal Tommy Bishop back in 1969.
It was a true 'David vs Goliath' moment as the English test halfback packed up his spuds business in St Helens and took a chance Down Under with wife Betty and their ankle-biters.
The rugby league world was buzzing when renowned writer Ernie Christensen finagled a deal for Bishop to join the Eastern Suburbs Roosters.
The spotlight was set to shine bright on Bishop as he teamed up with some of the game's biggest names like Mullins, Harris, Peard, and Junee.
But as they say in the game, things can change faster than a blink of an eye.
When Bishop landed in Sydney after a grueling journey, he found out the Roosters had done a 180 on the deal.
The Eels were also suddenly not interested in the crafty Englishman.
Now stranded over 17,000 kilometers from home, Bishop was left without a club.
Luckily, a glimmer of hope emerged with Easts Newcastle, but Bishop had his heart set on playing in the Sydney competition.
The true Aussie spirit was on full display as Bishop fought to make his mark in the rugby league scene.
