Hunt Considers Unexpected Career Change

Brisbane Broncos' star halfback Ben Hunt has faced uncertainty about his playing future, previously expected to retire after 2026.

Hunt's teammate, veteran halfback Adam Reynolds, will also see his contract end in 2026. Reynolds has had his share of injuries, including one during the Grand Final this past year. However, he recently extended his contract by one year to ensure he continues playing at least until the end of 2026. In contrast, Hunt had originally signed a two-year deal with the Broncos after leaving St. George Illawarra Dragons, aiming to stay through 2026.

The Broncos' salary cap situation raises questions for their roster moving forward, especially with high-value contracts for players like Payne Haas, Patrick Carrigan, and Reece Walsh. Currently, Hunt is reportedly earning around $500,000, a figure that could decrease as they plan for 2027.

At 35, Hunt is expected to alternate between dummy-half and halves roles in 2026, depending on the form and fitness of Reynolds and Ezra Mam. Reynolds will be succeeded by Jonah Pezet, who has signed from Melbourne Storm via Parramatta Eels and will join the Broncos for the upcoming season.

According to News Corp, Hunt is exploring various options but has not made a final decision regarding his future. Michael Maguire has expressed interest in keeping Hunt at the Broncos beyond 2026, indicating that many decisions will hinge on Reynolds's performance next year. "A lot depends on 'Reyno's' path next year, but it's quite handy having a player like 'Hunty' around," Maguire stated.
