Holmes is where the heart is: Stars commit to Aitu ahead of RLWC26

Cook Islands head coach Karmichael Hunt has expressed enthusiasm over Marata Niukore's commitment to aid the Aitu in qualifying for the upcoming World Cup. Additionally, Valentine Holmes has also confirmed his dedication to representing the Pacific nation.

Despite playing for New Zealand in the last World Cup in 2022, Niukore has joined the Cook Islands squad in Papua New Guinea as they prepare for a match against Fiji in the Pacific Championships.

Holmes, who is currently injured, plans to contribute by joining the coaching staff of the Cook Islands team.

The squad is gearing up for a World Cup qualifier against South Africa on November 9 at CommBank Stadium, with upcoming clashes against Fiji and Papua New Guinea set for Saturday and October 25, respectively.

Should the Cook Islands secure a spot in the RLWC2026, Holmes has committed to representing his heritage at the tournament, as he is eligible through his Cook Islands-born mother, Lucy.

Hunt noted that Holmes would have participated if not for a season-ending shoulder injury sustained while playing for the Dragons. The Maroons star will attend a team camp in the Cook Islands prior to the World Cup qualifier.
