Fans of the Broncos felt a wave of sadness on Thursday night as Delouise Hoeter participated in a farewell lap for departing players, marking the first public acknowledgment of his exit. Hoeter joined Adam Reynolds, Corey Jensen, and Jesse Arthars on the field for this tribute before the game.
Following the game, Payne Haas, Gehamat Shibasaki, and Grant Anderson were also honored, as they had played against the Melbourne Storm and missed the pre-game ceremony. While the departures of six other players were already known, Hoeter's absence was a surprise.
The 32-year-old has been part of the Broncos since 2022 but played only nine matches at NRL level. Despite being a fan favorite, he primarily spent his career in reserve grade and coping with injuries. Prior to his time with Brisbane, he played seven matches for the Wests Tigers back in 2015.
Having no contract extending to 2027, his departure was confirmed on Thursday night, leaving fans wondering if he would continue playing elsewhere or choose to retire. Many fans took to social media to express their sadness about the end of Hoeter's time with the Broncos, with one user stating, "Well played Delouise Hoeter - left your mark at the club," and another saying, "Going to miss him."
Reynolds and Jensen have retired, while Haas (South Sydney), Shibasaki (Perth Bears), Arthars (Catalans Dragons), and Anderson (Warriors) will pursue opportunities elsewhere. Additionally, Jack Gosiewski, Jaiyden Hunt, and Josh Rogers remain without contracts, with updates on their futures likely to come after the Broncos' final match next weekend.
Meanwhile, the club has signed Mitch Barnett, Dane Gagai, Shawn Blore, and Jonah Pezet for the 2027 season. CEO Dave Donaghy shared with The Courier Mail this month: "Of course we want to keep everyone and we want to get to a position where we are able to keep the nucleus of the group together. But some guys games' evolve so much that we just can't afford them and they are able to change their lives by earning a big cheque somewhere else. You have to have a balance (under the salary cap), everyone understands that."
