Haas Facing 10-Year Ban Amidst R360 Rumors
Payne Haas is the latest player rumored to be in talks with the new rugby competition, R360. Such a move could spell disaster for the Brisbane Broncos, and the NRL has confirmed it would have significant consequences for Haas's rugby league career.
The NRL reiterated its decision to enforce a stringent 10-year ban on any player who chooses to join the R360 competition, which includes the Broncos' star player.
Reports from News Corp indicate that the 25-year-old prop has been approached by R360 officials, with offers potentially reaching up to $6 million over two years, alongside tax-free benefits for residency in Dubai.
While Haas has not yet finalized any agreement, sources close to R360 suggest that the Broncos' powerhouse may be inclined to sign with the new league, which is still pursuing official recognition.
The NRL's firm position comes in light of the ARL Commission's ruling that any athlete participating in an unapproved competition will face a decade-long ban, effectively ending their NRL career.
"If the money being speculated is right, it's not a shock that Payne would want to explore that," warned Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, cautioning the star prop against pursuing "fool's gold" in a largely untested league.
Donaghy expressed the club's optimism about retaining Haas long-term, noting that a multi-year contract extension has already been proposed to keep him at Red Hill through 2027.
