Broncos Set Timeline for Haas Negotiations Amid New Opportunity

Payne Haas is reportedly considering a move to the PNG Chiefs in 2028, adding another twist to the Brisbane Broncos' efforts to retain their star prop. Haas's current contract expires at the end of 2026, and although initial fears of him leaving for 2027 were quelled when R360 negotiations stalled, it appears he is only willing to agree to a one-year extension with Brisbane for now.

There has been speculation that Haas would not play for another NRL club, suggesting that his exit from Brisbane would likely require an offer from a rival code with a substantial financial package. This was the case with R360, which had proposed a lucrative deal before its start date was pushed back to 2028.

News Corp reports that Haas is anticipated to sign the discussed one-year extension upon his return from the World Club Challenge against Hull KR. However, his focus might not be solely on rugby league. The report indicates that he is open to becoming the marquee player for the expansion team, the PNG Chiefs, as they prepare to enter the league in 2028.

Based in Port Moresby, the Chiefs are gearing up to form their inaugural playing group, with the ability to sign players starting November 1. If Haas were to be available, the Chiefs are likely to offer him an attractive financial package, especially since such earnings would be tax-free for him.

Although winning a premiership has been a long-standing desire for Haas, and he and his teammates secured the Provan-Summons Trophy in 2025, the potential opportunity with the Chiefs could be enticing.
