Gould questions Newcastle's Grand Final credentials

‘It will defy logic’: Gould makes brutal NRL Grand Final prediction

Phil Gould says the Roosters' spine gives them a major advantage over Newcastle in Sunday's 2026 Grand Final.

He says all four Roosters are Origin-experienced and Origin-class performers, while Kalyn Ponga is the only Knight with those credentials and will be heavily marked.

Gould, a two-time premiership-winning coach and Bulldogs supremo, posted his analysis on X after Friday-night requests from fans.

"If the Knights win the Grand Final on Sunday, it will put into question everything I've ever believed about finals football," Gould said.

He predicts a comfortable Roosters win by five tries to two.

Gould questioned the opposition Newcastle had beaten: South Sydney lost Cody Walker early and had no other Origin players in its spine.

He described the Warriors as brave but out of form late in the season, with no Origin-experienced players in their spine.

Newcastle beat Penrith without Nathan Cleary; Dylan Edwards was clearly injured, and the Panthers had no other Origin-class players in their spine, Gould said.

Gould expects the Roosters' spine to deliver a peak performance if the team executes, and believes it would be too strong for Newcastle.

"In the end though, I only see a Rooster victory."
