Moses Mbye believes Zane Harrison can become "a leader at the club" and says the Gold Coast Titans must give him time to grow.
Mbye, a former NRL halfback who manages programs and development at affiliate club Ipswich Jets, told AAP he knows Harrison's family.
Harrison grew up in Tweed Heads wanting to play for the Titans, Mbye said, despite the chance to chase "big bucks" elsewhere.
The 20-year-old signed through 2029 a week ago and discussed the extension publicly for the first time at Thursday's jersey launch.
His deal was completed before the November 1 free-agency window, so he did not formally consider other clubs, including the PNG Chiefs.
Asked whether the Chiefs' tax-free incentive tempted him, Harrison replied: "Not at all,"
He added: "I didn't have my eyes anywhere else. My love for the Gold Coast is unmatched, my decision was easy."
Jayden Campbell is contracted through 2031 and Keano Kini through 2030, giving the Titans long-term commitments across their spine.
A hamstring injury ended Harrison's season, but he made 11 appearances and kicked the winning field goal in a 19-18 victory over Penrith.
The Titans have developed playmakers including Jahrome Hughes, Toby Sexton, Jamal Fogarty, Kane Elgey and Ash Taylor, though each later moved on, struggled or left the game.
Mbye called Harrison's extension "a brave call from both parties and the right call" and urged the club to accept mistakes as he develops.
Harrison is nearing full fitness and hopes to participate fully in pre-season training.
