Cronulla Sharks legend Paul Gallen has urged for life bans for staff who overlooked concussion symptoms in Melbourne Storm's Eliesa Katoa during the recent Pacific Championships. Katoa, a prominent second-rower now recognized as one of the best in his position, was permitted to play against New Zealand despite suffering a head injury in the warm-up-a fact that went unnoticed.
During the match, Katoa endured two additional head knocks, ultimately requiring oxygen on the sidelines before being rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for a brain bleed. While he has returned to Melbourne, the club announced he will miss the entire 2026 season, leading to concerns among medical professionals regarding the future of his career.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Gallen voiced strong opinions about the matter, suggesting severe repercussions for those responsible. "Anyone who has not done their job properly in this matter that has clearly let the player down should be sidelined for a minimum of a year at least, if not a life ban. It was ridiculous," he stated to Nine Newspapers.
