Oneata Schwalger, a former NRLW star and dual international, has embarked on an international coaching journey after taking on a role with the Atlanta Rhinos at the NRL Vegas Nines.
She is now aiming to assist Nigeria in securing a women's spot at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup set to take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Schwalger, a foundation player for the Dragons since 2018, is part of a growing trend of NRLW players transitioning into coaching roles following their playing careers, showcasing her diverse background where she represented Samoa in rugby league and Australia in rugby union.
Schwalger began her coaching career with junior teams, particularly those involving her son Malaki Schwalger-Ioane, who plays for South Sydney's Harold Mathews Cup side.
While her coaching experience has predominantly been with male teams, her recent role with Atlanta Rhinos marks a significant milestone in her coaching endeavors.
She led the men's team during this year's Vegas Nines, which was part of the NRL's Festival of Rugby League, including a highly publicized quadruple header on March 1 at Allegiant Stadium.
Looking ahead, the 2026 Vegas Nines will be announced in the coming weeks, and Schwalger is actively engaging with a Florida-based USARL club, in addition to continuing her collaboration with the Rhinos.
Her commitment to expanding her coaching repertoire and contributing to the international rugby league landscape underscores her dedication to the sport.
