'Young halves these days get so much pressure put on them': How a stint in reserve grade unlocked Toby Sexton's true potential
There are plenty of stars who have helped the Bulldogs turn things around this year, including this unsung hero.
Bulldogs halfback Toby Sexton, 23, revealed that a spell in reserve grade earlier in the season was "the best thing for me," as he continued his stellar form with two crucial try assists over the weekend, positioning his team on the brink of a top-four finish.
In a world where young playmakers are often expected to shine from day one, Sexton had to wait his turn following a mixed spell with the Titans before joining Canterbury midway through the 2023 campaign.
Although not the flashiest player on the field, Sexton has proven to be the perfect partner for Matt Burton, showcasing his playmaking skills by setting up two tries for Bronson Xerri in quick succession on Saturday, helping the Bulldogs secure a victory over their rivals and maintain fifth place on the ladder.
With a 9-2 record in games he's played this season and a successful stint in NSW Cup where he won six out of seven matches and scored six tries, Sexton's determination and hard work during his time out of the first-grade squad have paid off immensely.
Reflecting on his time in reserve grade, Sexton commented, "I honed my skills in all aspects of the game required of an NRL halfback.
I focused on improving my kicking, sharpening my defensive prowess, and learning how to lead a team effectively."
As the young half continues to impress with his newfound form, it's clear that his time in reserve grade has been instrumental in unlocking his true potential on the field.
