In a heartfelt plea, former rugby league international John Hopoate has called on players of Samoa heritage to represent the national side, following their disappointing Pacific Championship campaign.

Samoa suffered a heavy defeat of 38-12 against Australia, before being thrashed 50-0 by New Zealand, a stark contrast to their previous success in reaching the World Cup final.

Hopoate, who himself played for Australia and Tonga, remains deeply passionate about the Pasifika cause and is disheartened by Samoa's sudden decline.

In an effort to inspire more players to join the Samoan team, Hopoate took to social media, posting pictures of players who had chosen to represent Samoa over Australia.

This included Penrith grand final heroes Stephen Crichton and Brian To'o, as well as Parramatta enforcer Junior Paulo.

Hopoate issued a challenge to other NRL stars, urging them to join the crusade and play for their heritage.

Among the eligible players who could potentially switch camps from Australia to Samoa are Gold Coast hardman Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Brisbane powerhouse Payne Haas, and Cowboys flyer Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.

Hopoate firmly believes that a fully-strengthened Samoan team would be nearly unstoppable.

In a direct message to the players, Hopoate stated, "All the Samoan Boys need to do what these boys (Crichton, To'o, Paulo) are doing and repping where they come from." His plea highlights the importance of players embracing their cultural background and representing their heritage on the international stage.

Hopoate's passion for the cause serves as a powerful reminder of the unity and strength that can be achieved when players come together to support their homeland.
