From Hooker to Hot Property: Broncos Discuss New Deal

LeagueNews.co | Jess Malloy

The Brisbane Broncos have opened talks with off-contract hooker Cory Paix, a player who had been rumored to be on his way out of the club for the past three years.

Despite not making a first-grade appearance last season, Paix was one of the highest-paid players in the QLD Cup competition, with an estimated salary of $320,000 per season.

He was overlooked for first-grade spots in favor of other players and was linked with several other teams, including the Canberra Raiders, Manly Sea Eagles, and Sydney Roosters, as well as clubs in the Super League competition.

Paix had even been granted permission to speak with rival clubs from the end of 2023 by the Broncos, who seemed willing to let him go.

However, things took a turn for the better for Paix when Michael Maguire came on board.

Under Maguire's guidance, Paix's fortunes at the Broncos began to change, and he is now in talks to potentially secure a starting role with the team.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future in the past, the Broncos now seem keen to retain Paix as a key member of their spine.

Paix's resurgence at the club has sparked discussions about a contract extension, showing a turnaround in his situation at Red Hill.

The report states, "The Broncos are open to holding preliminary discussions to lock Paix into a new contract, with Maguire believed to be keen to see the hooker play a significant role in his side moving forward."

This development marks a significant shift for Paix, who had previously been considered likely to leave the club.

His potential new role with the Broncos highlights the impact that changes in coaching staff can have on a player's fortunes, with Maguire's influence potentially securing Paix's future at the club.
