‘Incredible honour’: Dean Widders resigns as Parramatta NRLW coach

After three years in charge, Dean Widders has resigned as the coach of the Parramatta Eels in the NRLW.

Widders cited the increased challenges of balancing the demands of the extended women's competition with his role in wellbeing and education with the NRL as the reason for his departure.

Despite the difficulties, Widders had a successful stint with the Eels, leading them to the NRLW grand final last year.

In their inaugural season, the Eels won two games under Widders' guidance.

However, their real moment of glory came in the 2022 semis, when they upset the previously unbeaten Roosters to secure a spot in the grand final.

Unfortunately, the introduction of four new teams in the competition disrupted their progress, and several high-profile players, including Simaima Taufa and Gayle Broughton, left the club.

The Eels struggled in the expanded 10-team competition, finishing the year with the wooden spoon.

They managed to win just one game, while also conceding the most points and scoring the fewest.

Despite the challenges faced, Widders expressed gratitude for his time as coach, stating, "It's been an incredible honour to coach the inaugural Parramatta Eels women's team."

Widders' departure leaves a void in the coaching staff of the Eels, who will now have to find a replacement to lead the team in the upcoming season.

It remains to be seen who will take on the role and whether they will be able to build upon the progress made under Widders' tenure.
