From Excavator Operator to NRL Aspirant

How this Wests Tigers hopeful went from an excavator to an NRL pre-season

Pat Herbert found himself three years after his last NRL game, operating an excavator and focusing on life away from rugby. His aspirations resurfaced unexpectedly when circumstances took an unexpected turn.

After a planned move to the Super League in early 2023 fell through, Herbert explored various jobs, including landscaping, but remained far from the rugby league spotlight.

During one of his workdays, he received a call from Wests Tigers, granting him the second chance that many former players dream of.

"I got a call from the Tigers while I was on the excavator, and here we are," Herbert recalled, expressing how overwhelming it was to have this opportunity after such a break.

Reflecting on his time away, he mentioned, "That time was necessary for me to do some growth within myself away from being a footy player," recognizing the importance of seizing opportunities. He emphasized this wisdom to younger players, sharing that his time away made him appreciate what he once had.

"It got stripped away from me. I'm so lucky to get another crack," he said. Herbert has since dedicated himself to a train-and-trial deal with the Tigers, working hard to make the most of this second chance.
